A Dabbawala (one who carries the box) is a person in the Indian city of Mumbai whose job is to carry and deliver freshly made food from home in lunch boxes to office workers. Although the work sound simple, it is in fact a highly specialized trade that is over a century old and which has become integral to Mumbai’s culture.
The thing I like the most about this company is the art of designing the supply of chain. About 200,000 lunches get moved every day and according to statistics there is only one mistake in every 6000,000 deliveries. The lunch carriers deliver the food at the lunch time and then take the dabbawala in a reverse logistics. There are many people involved In the process of delivery. Dabbawala is still using low tech and did not use the high technologies available.
